What goes into creating a quality mask

A lot of research went into determining the various options for mask designs, fabric selections, nose pieces, elastics, and stitching techniques.  We then used the results of our research to create the most optimum masks with respect to both function and form.

Fabrics
  • 100% cotton is the most highly recommended fabric, and some studies show that multiple layers of different fabrics can have additional benefits.
  • All of our masks are made with 2 or 3 layers of fabric.
  • Our lining layer is always made with 100% cotton.
  • Our top layers are made with cotton, satin, embroidered lace, chiffon, and silk.
Reduction of eyeglass fogging
  • Our masks are specifically shaped to be higher on the nose to reduce eyeglass fogging.
  • Properly used metal nose pieces also reduce eyeglass fogging.
Maximizing virus containment
  • Our masks are designed with a filter pocket so that you can add a filter if needed.
  • Many different kinds of materials can be used for filters including hepa filter cloth, coffee filters, paper towels, shop towels, and even facial tissues or toilet paper.
  • Minimizing stitching on the top layer ensures that opportunities for viruses to seep through are reduced.  That is why our masks have a minimal center seam, with seams only as needed at the top of the nose and bottom of the chin.
  • To minimize any extra holes being poked in the fabric, clips are used instead of pins to hold pieces of fabric together while stitching.
Metal nose pieces
  • The nose pieces that we use are made of aluminum and are washable.
  • The ends of the nose pieces are rounded - no sharp edges.
  • The nose pieces are flat so that they are more comfortable around your nose.
  • The nose pieces are inserted into a specially designed pocket so that you can remove the piece if you prefer to use without it or if you need to replace it.
Elastic
  • After testing a variety of elastics, we chose a soft and comfortable elastic that is gentle on the ear and skin.
  • The elastic is inserted into a channel as opposed to being sewn into the seams, so that it can be replaced if necessary.
  • Children's masks come with small silicone size adjusters to ensure they continue to fit even through quick growth spurts.
Stitching
  • High-quality Gutermann thread is used for all stitching.
  • Top stitching ensures that masks not only look good, they last longer, and retain their shape through multiple washings.

We trust you will enjoy wearing our masks!  Stay healthy and safe!
